Tesla, full name Nikola Tesla, was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist who is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.

Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia, which was then part of the Austrian Empire. He attended the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz, where he studied electrical engineering and physics. After leaving the Polytechnic, he worked as an assistant to Thomas Edison in the United States before striking out on his own.

Tesla’s inventions and discoveries include the Tesla coil, a transformer that produces high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating-current electricity; the alternating current motor, which is the basis for the modern power grid; and the wireless communication system, which anticipated the development of modern telecommunications.

Throughout his life, Tesla was known for his unconventional and often eccentric behavior, including his famous experiments with high-frequency electrical currents and his claims to have received communication from extraterrestrial beings. Despite his innovative ideas, he struggled financially throughout his career and died in relative obscurity in a New York City hotel room on January 7, 1943, at the age of 86.

In recent years, Tesla has become an icon for many in the technology and innovation fields, with companies like Tesla Inc. and the Elon Musk Foundation working to advance his legacy through initiatives focused on renewable energy and education.
